VDA Joins “Protect Our Democracy Coalition” to Fight HB 1244

Today, the VDA was proud to join the “Protect our Democracy Coalition” spearheaded by the League of Women Voters of South Dakota. The coalition was formed in response to House Bill 1244, which would allow signatures to be withdrawn from initiative petitions, and is intended to serve as a “watchdog” against attempts to weaken South Dakotans’ ballot initiative rights.

Alongside our coalition partners, the VDA will be testifying against HB 1244 in the Senate State Affairs Committee hearing on February 28.

The “Protect our Democracy” Coalition includes the following organizations: the League of Women Voters of South Dakota, the Voter Defense Association of South Dakota, South Dakota Advocacy Network for Women, South Dakota Farmers Union, Dakotans for Health, Take It Back, South Dakotans for Healthy Families, American Association of University Women Rapid City, Change Agents South Dakota, Dakota Rural Action, Teamsters Local 120, Open Primaries, Common Grounds Indivisible South Dakota, ACLU South Dakota, Democracy in Action, Zonta Club of the Southern Black Hills, South Dakota Counseling Association, and South Dakota State Federation of Labor AFL-CIO.
